What are open-top containers?

When transporting general cargo, open-top containers are frequently used in addition to standard containers. These are available in various dimensions and usually consist of corrugated steel and a durable wooden floor. Unlike conventional containers, open-top containers—as the name suggests—have an opening at the top. This opening is usually covered with a tarpaulin to protect the contents from environmental influences or theft. Open-top containers are used for all types of general cargo, but they also have a significant disadvantage. They are often not available in the desired quantity, and if they are, then usually only as part of a complete round trip to the port. This poses a real problem for companies that need capacity quickly and rely on flexible, multimodal solutions.
